Introduction

The geologist work to develop a model of Earth's history and attempts to put events in order of what happened first, what is second, and so on. When the relative age of a rock or event is determined, this information can be diagramed as a cross-section showing the vertical distribution of geologic rock unit.

Instructions: Use the following Principles to determine which layer of rock is the oldest and then tell what events took place in the proper order.

Uniformitarianism

The process that shape the Earths surface today are the same processes that occurred in the past.

    Superposition

If the layer of rocks are not overturned, the bottom layer is the oldest.

    Original Horizontality

The rock layer is always older than the process that changed it.

    Igneous Intrusions and Extrusions

  • When molten rock (magma) squeezes into the preexisting rock and crystallize, it forms an igneous intrusion.
  • When molten rock (lava) flows on the earths surface and solidifies, it forms an igneous extrusion.
